Will Bush have the CHARACTER to concede if he looses Popular Vote?

I see a bitter, contentious time ahead if one side feels the election has been stolen. Already there are reports of unexplained slow counts of votes in Florida from heavily Deomcratic areas. A judge somewhere else ordered polling places closed on voters who were in line to vote. Very unamerican.

What will Bush do if he's wins in Florida by a handful of possibly massaged votes and looses the majority?

No way, would you do it ?
IMO Bush didn't win if he looses the popular vote. Would be the case where I live.

Gore has allready said he will conceed if Bush Wins Florida. In fact he allready conceeded and took it back. If Bush wins the elecotral vote he wins the election and I'm sure will not conceed to Gore. Right or Wrong this is the way the system is right now. Hopefully they will see the light and make significant changes to the system to keep it from happening again. They will have to do a recount in Florida reguardless so Gore may win yet. Who knows!?!

I don't even understand this electoral crap :) but if you get them you win, why should he have to concede. I thought I read that clinton didn't win the popular vote either.

This would not be the first time a pres. lost the popular vote and won the election. ( in the 1960's or '70s I think it happened) Lots of ways to look at it, Gore has won fewer but larger states, while Bush has won more smaller states. It could be agrued that a Bush victory is the many smaller states beating the fewer more populus ones. So even though more people live there they do not get to sway the election to their own private ends.
Look at the map, it is clear that most of the states want Bush.

BTW. I voted Gore, would rather have voted Nader and should have as my states measly few EC votes don't matter much.

You win the Electoral vote you win period. Personally regardless of who wins or loses the system sucks.

The nominee with the most popular votes should win regardless of whether or not they are the candidate I voted for.

Bush can do whatever he wants, but that's regardless. If he wins Fla he *will* be the next president. Having the character to concede anything to Gore won't make Gore president, doesn't work that way.

I said it before, if Gore can't win his home state what does that say about him. Maybe they know something we don't.

How many Democrats stayed home and didn't vote in NY because of the landslide nature of the election for them?

How many Republicans stayed home in Texas because of the landslide?

Make the popular vote count, and voter turnout will likely be higher and the numbers will mean more.

What are the current results at for popular vote BTW?

I have checked five different press sources and they all disagree, range of having Bush or Gore up by varrying amounts, does anyone know of an official government site that has some numbers?

Gore was getting ready to concede at one point, but then the Florida situation got even more complicated.

I think popular vote should probabaly decide...not sure...but I would not personally expect bush to conceed, even though I would prefer gore.

stallion I'm on CNN now and it is 48,234,493 for bush and 48,427,330 for gore.

It's simple...If Bush wins Florida, he wins the election. He won't concede, just because Gore won the popular vote. The laws of the United States are set up to use the Electoral College, not the popular vote.

This has happened before, where the person who won the popular vote didn't win the election.

But, I would like the laws changed....so the popular vote winner would be president.

Still, if Bush wins Florida he wins. Period.

Would Gore have the CHARACTER to concede if he lost the popular vote?

Somehow I seriously doubt it.

This isn't like Yugoslavia's election. I don't think anyone cares enough to go on strike or overthrow the capitol. According to the way our presidential election works, as of now Bush is the winner. IF the Florida recount gives the state to Gore, he may be the winner. I imagine it will be a few weeks before everyone agrees on what the actual totals are.

Wisconsin: Gore by 12,000 out of 2.4 Million
Iowa: Gore by 5,000 out of 1.3 Million
Florida: Bush by 2,000 out of 6 Million

I think whoever wins will win by the rules, and the guy who concedes in an election like this wasn't really thinking to straight.

I guess that none of you paid attention in history class. The founding fathers set up the electoral college for a reason. Remember - we do not live in a Democracy in the U.S.A., we live in a Democratic Republic. The voices of the masses are not always right, nor do they always get their way.

Loses, not "looses" -- that would be "releasing", which in effect he has in getting Republicans around the country vote. Anyway, pet peeve of mine.

This has been a very interesting election -- populous urban centers vote for their entitlements, less populous rural areas vote to keep the feds out of their business. At least now I know where I can and cannot move (MA, CT, MD and NY are completely out).

I don't think there has ever been a Pres elected that didn't win the popular vote and the electoral college.

Character? You mean stupidity? He would have to be an idiot if he won the election yet still gave up the office to gore. Everyone knows the electoral college is a load of crap, but them's the rules.

I heard there is a new definition for agoraphobia:

fear of al gore. ;)

If he does this, I'd vote for him and even monetarily donate to his campaign if he ever ran again, as that is so far beyond the character of a normal politician. However, Bush probably isn't the one who gets to make those decisions. I doubt Republican senators and congresspeople would let their puppet get off the leash.
