Main reason is that I wont need cable anymore, so no broadband at the house.
2nd is that Faxing with vonage is such a pain in the ass, I can never fax more than 1 page successfully.

I guess i'll be returning to DSL once i'm back at home after spring semester.

Should I stick it with Cable ? or go with DSL ?
I hope fiber optic is available in my area soon.

Fiber optic is going to take some time to roll out to the public at large. Which to go with is dependent upon your area. In some areas DSL is better than cable and in others vice versa. From what I've heard DSL is usually better out on the east coast but I could be incorrect.

What's cable speed in your area, and is 1.5/384 enough for you? I say 1.5/384 for $30/month is pretty good, which is Verizon's standard DSL. And rumor is they'll be increasing d/l to 3mbit soon. But in my area basic cable internet is 10/1 for $43/mo for cable TV customers, $50/mo without TV (ie. me). I stick with DSL even with those ridiculous speeds (though I'll admit I'm fiendishly tempted), because 99% of the time 1.5/384 is more than enough. Waiting for fibop may well be like waiting for HL2 (ie. a fools' game)

May be true for much of the east coast, but I'm in se NY and, as you've read, standard DSL here is 1.5/384 while standard cable is 10/1. Speaking of which... Am I fooling myself? Should I switch & pay $20/mo more for cable?

cable was 3.0/384

DSL is currently 1.5/384 and it's rumored to be bumping up to 3.0 real soon ( most likely by the time i'm back spring semester )

you're fooling yourself ;)

at least in the NYC-area, even though theoretical cable speeds are faster, they get bogged down quickly by the sheer number of users sharing the lines.
