So... jump a hundred years into the future and we have ships that can travel faster than the speed of light.

We have also found planets near us that can support human life.

Would atheists be the first people to leave Earth and head out into the universe?

I think they would because their lack of religious beliefs would keep them from wanting to stay on earth due to religious concerns. The belief in creationism would keep most religious folks from wanting to leave the world that god created for them etc etc.

What do you guys think?

I dunno, I would hope that humanity would adopt a more broad view on religion. Though Buddhist teachings don't really tie their teachings to earth or anything ;P

Why would having or not having a religious view have anything to do with colonizing a distant planet or not?

Your question just doesn't make sense.

If the journey is going to require highly technical/problem solving skills, the crew will likely be nonreligious. If it's on the level of a passenger liner, I can see religious communities moving, looking for the simple life.

Nope, Tom Cruise and John Travolta are going to bring Hubbard's wisdom to the stars.

The first will be some of the best of the best due to the difficulties of being first. They will probably consider themselves "spiritual but not religious."

God created the universe. That would be the justification.

Maybe there'll be a new dominant religion in 100 years that doesn't require a deity.

I'm still never gonna give up on Astleyism.

I would think the religious would want to go too, so they can convert the aliens to their respective faiths.

Funny seeing this thread since I just finished watching Contact this morning. Goes hand in hand with this thread.

Whichever group is being oppressed at the time. Just like those that colonized the US. The have the least to lose and the most to gain with a new start. There will also be the adventurous but as a large group, it will whoever wants to get out of Dodge.

If Christians don't travel the cosmos, who will teach the poor Marklar about Jesus Christ?!

I think it's a silly, overgeneralized notion.

For one thing, plenty of religious folk would probably relish the opportunity to, in their minds, "find God."

I think theists care more about establishing theocracy than atheists care about escaping theists.

So if anyone settles off-world for religious reasons, I'd think the theists are a more likely candidate.

No, manifest destiny will force christians to venture out as fast as possible before anyone else can.

That is the rapture after all - all the "holy" will disappear to "the heavens". ;)

Hell no. Didn't you see the Pope preaching his shit to the people on the space station just a few days ago? That pissed me off because now I know there must be a requirement to believe in God to do anything for NASA.

I hope they lose even more funding than they already have. They'll just ensure that the first people to make contact anywhere will go out and spew their beliefs all over the universe.
