I'm talking the last 20 years of course. I can't stand today's music except for the odd gem here and there. Back in my day it was all gems.

More seriously, rock seems to be dead as a cultural phenomena. There's some quality niche genres, but not much is happening with mass appeal.

20 years ago is not very long, and I doubt many people in 1995 were thought of as Rock & Roll Gods.

The whole term is a bit ridiculous to begin with to begin with.

Probably more appropriate to 40-60 years ago.

Jack White probably
Same for Dave Grohl
John Mayer has potential too, that guy can play guitar.

Then again, the definition of 'rock god' is fluid and subject to personal preference.

Probably what you have listed there as far as Rock goes, ya.

Mayer is Blues heavily, but that has always been a Rock mainstay anyhow.

I guess I used the terminology wrong. I guess any musician/band that will be remembered as ground breaking/awesome.

^^

John Mayer aint no rock god but he sure as fuck can play guitar.

On my list as all around "rock god", whether or not I like their music... - Grohl, Reznor, Maynard, Homme, White

Alright, alright, I'll get off your lawn.

In all seriousness, though: "Back in my day it was all gems." No it wasn't, no matter when your day was.

I think you can go back to the 90s and find some candidates. But I don't think anything has popped up since then. It will likely come back around again but for now it's kind of in a lull.

Seems right now we are in more of a period of folk, blues, country progressive or whatever you want to call it type of rock.

With that said, I do like Cage the Elephant and can tell you that at least in a live environment they do indeed kick some ass.

*edit*
How could I forget. Gary Clark Jr. has loads of potential.

Bieber for sure

hehe, of course!

There are still some good newish bands. Muse for eg.

I'm not sure that there are bands out there that will be Icons of Rock right now, but there are good ones out there.

Matt Bellamy is crazy good at what he does.

I really try to avoid the pop music stations but sometimes have to listen to it at work or just casually in other places but i can't say for sure that i've ever heard one of his songs.
Name some current pop tart or boy band & i could tell you that i've at least heard one of there songs but not one of his as far as i know.

Alabama Shakes has massive potential, but I don't see any "Page", "Entwistle", "Bonham" however Brittany Howard could go down as a vocal goddess (see Janis, Anne Wilson, etc)

What Rock & Roll? There isn't any.

The 80's were the shit for Rock & Roll! Matter of fact, I think I'll play some now by god. LOL

Muse is good. One of the best live rock shows I've seen in several years. But they've been around for awhile. As I recall the first album came out in the late 90s.

Cannot stand Muse, mainly because of the singing

Black Keys have released a lot of decent material

Possibly Adam Levine. I'd say Grohl more than anyone because the media makes him out to seem like a genuinely cool guy.

Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Jack White, Killers, Muse, Black Keys, Arcade Fire, National and I'm sure there are others depending on what you listen to.
