no next gen cards will g80 and r600.

IIRC Crysis will be first released for Windows XP which is DX9. I think the E3 videos of Crysis used X1900 hardware which is incapable of DX10 so you don't have to buy G80 or R600 to play Crysis.

Unless they sent those screenshots for Crysis back in a time machine, one can believe that

a) Crysis doesn't need directx 10, or
b) Crysis requires directx10 and there is currently a videocard that is dx10 compatible/compliant.

crysis won't require DX10, considering DX10 won't come out until middle of next year.

Or they used the DX10 reference renderer...

Nah, I reckon DirectX 9's updates can only go so far. Remember that key to DirectX 10 is the revised driver model that Vista uses, something XP would never be able to emulate.

We won't see DX10 only games for a while, look how long DX9's been out and we're just now seeing a DX9 only game (oblivion)

I just spent £300 on an X1900XT, and now everyone's telling me I should have waited for HDCP and DX10. Dammit.

If they really wanted to they could have added support for the new driver model to XP.

I don't believe we've seen Crysis running in DX10. AFAIK DX10 API's are not yet completed and you would need to be running on Windows Vista. I don't think Crytek would risk all the crashing that could be going on at E3 with a beta game on a beta OS on beta API's. My conclusion, all Crysis shots and reels we've been watching are DX9 shots on WinXP. If Crysis looks like that already on DX9, there really isn't any compelling reason at this time to jump to DX10. It's likely that the game won't look that good on more realistic system specs as it's likely a SLI rig or Crossfire rig that was running Crysis in E3.

Right now, I believe there's nothing GCard wise that will be compatable with DX10.

However, I'm waiting for DX10 to make an appearance before I decide whether I'm going to haul ass to the upgrades, or whether I'm going to sit back and watch people tell each other 'how awesome the graphics can be' on games with the same plotline as Doom.

Maybe so, but then there'll be less reasons to run out and buy a new shiny copy of Vista.

No, everyone's not. I'm sure most ATer's will tell you to enjoy your DX9 gaming to the max with your awesome card for many months to come. The full set of DX10 OS, apps and hardware are a long way off in gaming hardware/software terms.
