Will an old sound card be any faster than the onboard audio?

So will a sound card necessarily help much over onboard audio?

I noticed that on 3dMark during the sound test, I lost a few frames per second over when the same test was run without sound?

Most of the documentation I've seen seems to point to the fact that having a PCI sound card will usually have an advantage over running the sound from the motherboard. I have a EP-8KDA3J motherboard, and today I installed an old sound card to see if there's any performance difference. The old sound card used to be a good one, not sure how it rates by today's standards. It's a Sound Blaster live, and I'm still downloading the drivers for it? I disabled the onboard sound through the BIOS, and hope this will improve performance.

So what do you guys think? Will the computer be any quicker like this? Or since it's an old crappy sound card, do you think there won't be much difference than with the on board audio?
