Will an old Pentium 4 work in a newer motherboard?

I have an old Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8GHz. I'm in the process of piecing together a new system for someone else, but they will have to order parts slowly, due to a limited budget. I'd like to get them up and running as fast as possible, so if I can use an older processor in the mean time, they can put a new processor later on their parts list.

Basically, will a P965 / P35 / P975 / 650i / etc. motherboard be able to run the old Prescott? I assume it would have no problem, but I wanted to double check to make sure ahead of time, due to voltages, FSB, etc. For those that didn't read the paragraph above, this will be replaced with a Core 2 Duo in the near future.

It should be able to, depending on the FSB of the P4. If it is 533, there might be fewer motherboards you can run it in compared to a P4 with 800Mhz FSB.

P965 and the P975 should be able to run the Prescott.

You have to look at the mobo makers websites to find out which CPU runs on whatever mobo.

Yeah, some of the newer mobos aren't supporting 533FSB processors any more, be careful.

The P965 and 975X chipsets and below support the P4. As for the P35 and X38, I read somewhere that Intel was not validating the Pentium4 on those chipsets.
