Will an External hard drive work between a mac and a pc?

I want to buy an external hard drive to transfer .jpg .psd and all types of picture formats between a mac and a pc with windows xp. Do I have to format the hard drive a special way? Or what do I need to do so it runs successfully?

Thanks for any help, I've never dealt with a mac before now.

It'll have to be formatted FAT32 to work. If the drive is over 30GB you'll have to format it on the Mac because XP won't allow you to create a FAT32 partition larger than that.
