Quick question- will my Dell Dimension fit my ATX motherboard?

If not- antyone know why a Dell would stop working- when turning on, it just makes beep sounds and nothing is displayed on the screen.

Thanks guys

Hard to say... some Dell models use standard sizes and connectors and some don't. Some use standard connectors but wired in different ways... without knowing specifics about the models and such, you could actually cause a fire by trying to make it work.

Saying it just makes beep sounds doesn't help too much. Could be a bad processor, motherboard, RAM, BIOS chip, video card...

Could you get us the following:
- Specific Model # of your Dimension (usually 4 digits on the front of the case)
- A more specific pattern of beeps
- Do you hear the fans turn on? (You may need to open the case and look to see if they are spinning, should be at least one fan in the back, one inside the Power Supply, one on top of the processor.

If the case has seven card slots and a standard size removable I/O shield plate, then a standard ATX mobo should fit. Need to check the PSU though as some time ago Dell used ATX PSUs with non-standard pinout.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300. (Well, had anyway. I cannibalized it and stuck it in a different case with a new mobo to make an HTPC.) The mounting holes in the Dell motherboard don't match a standard ATX motherboard. However, I can only speak for a Dimension 8300.

I know some Dell cases (although I don't know which) follow the BTX standard pretty closely.

also quick question- it has a agp graphic card and on the back of the board its got a vga port, but this port has a black cap over it. will this vga port work? (thats if the pc actually worked)

thanks guys

Are you sure it's 2 long and 1 short beep, or is it 2 short and 1 long beep which would usually indicate a video card error.

Dell's beep codes are weird and I can't figure them out, but that would seem likely.

Also apparently your Dell has diagnostic lights.

Hey mate thanks for the reply. So sorry...its actually a 4700..

the beep codes are hard to grasp on this.... its like this dunno which are long and short though.....

i think its two longs then two sorts.... a pause... then two more shorts and no more beeps after that.

EDIT: was wandering what the A,B,C,D on the back were.

Ok it apparently has a memory module problem.

Ill have a look tomorrow and see how i go.

Thanks for the help guys

I found this link and I figured I'd pass it along in case it ends up being of use to you:

Dell Dimension 4700 Spare Parts

If you end up needing a new motherboard, it looks like this place has them. I have no idea whether or not they're a good company to do business with though. It looks like they do offer a 90 day warranty on the used parts.
