Will AMD K6-2 400 MHz work on Gigabyte GA-586VX mobo?

Hello,

I wanted to upgrade my daughters system. It is Gigabyte GA-586VX mobo with Intel VX chipset. I flashed BIOS to 2.7 I believe. System is able to recognize dual voltage Cyrix MII 300 at 200 MHz and Pentium MMX at 200 MHz. I wonder if I will succeed if I upgrade processor to AMD K6-2 400 Mhz running at 400 Mhz using 2x multiplier (CPU should be CXT core). Will AMD K6-2 450 or AMD K6-2 500 do the same trick with 2x multiplier as AMD K6-2 400 Mhz. Please let me know. I know that it is not current but this is how things turned out.

I got IOpener from my friend and I wonder if anybody knows how to upgrade CPU from Winchip to Pentium MMX 200 Mhz. It is kind of hard to find info. I found one about AMD K6-2 modifications (requires soldering which I don't mind).

Answer: unlikely. According to Gigabyte, the max speed for that board is 200MHz. The board supports a max FSB of 66MHz and a max multiplier of 3 = 200.
Soldering? I don't know... hardly seems worth it for that rig unless you enjoy that kind of thing. My work just up and gave me a complete P166/437VX rig the other day to part out, and the only real thing of value in it to me is the 4GB HDD.

Yea I agree, the VX chipset was older for the socket 5/7 days. Now if it was a 430TX then yes, BUT even then it would have to run the CPU at 66Mhz FSB.

Best bet is to get a cheap Athlon XP and a all in one board like a nForce2 or KM266, fast and cheap
 
I already have XP2000+ and don't need another system like it. Maybe I would consider faster system but XP3000+ is not considerable jump for me to bother with it. This system with AMD K6-2 is for my kids (they are still little). If they are going to be teenagers, than obviously I will get something better for them.

That forum used to be the best place for info on this sort of thing.

From memory:
All the later K6s had a 6x multiplier when the 2x was chosen. Obviously that will be 6x 66 =400Mhz even you drop in a 450 or 500.
But these mobos may have bus frequencies of 75 or 83 besides 66. The problem will be that the K6s are rated for a lower voltage than the Pentium MMX.

The Winchip was a drop in replacement for Pentium MMX using the same voltages, although some of the multpliers were different. Changing to a Pentium MMX should not require any mobo alterations.Winchip data sheets Winchip was designed by Centaur which was owned by IDT and is now owned by VIA.
 
1) all K6-2s 400 or faster have the 2x=6x multiplier remap.
2) You can run the K6-2, but it will prolly run at 2.8v (use a big HSF, won't last forever)
3) can't help you with the IOpener 😱
