Will all this work and does it meet up with the standards of a server?

Ok, to begin with, no, I don't want any pentiums. Thank you.

Anyways, here's what I've managed to dig up so far (just the core components)

AMD 1700+/266 FSB Athlon XP PROCESSOR CPU - RETAIL
Asus A7V266-E KT266A Chipset 266/200MHz FSB Motherboard with Raid and Sound - OEM
ENLIGHT MEDIUM ATX TOWER CASE MODEL # EN-72370X3C4 - OEM
WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 120GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # WD1200JB - OEM, DRIVE ONLY
Crucial Micron 512MB 64x64 PC2100 DDR RAM, 184-Pin, CL=2.5-Unbuffered 2.5V, 6-Layers

I don't care about prices or anything, I just need to know if that'd work as a nice server or not... (and also that all components are compatible...)

Hum, you should probably list what you're going to be using this server for. You've got an SP (single processor) system worked out, and depending on the type of "server" you're going to build, I'd suggest going DP (dual processor) instead (money doesn't matter to you, which is a good thing :)).

I'd get the Tyan Thunder/Tiger MP motherboard and two Athlon XP 2100+ processors (or two Athlon MP 1900+ processors if you're really paranoid about total and complete compatibility). I'd think about SCSI, RAID, etc., but again it depends on what you're going to be using this server for.

More info please! :)

If you want it for file/ICS sharing -

1 Save your money and use an 'old' duron 800-1000mhz - or whatever you have lying around.
2 Same with the memory - no point having so much....
3 As far as the case goes - spend a few extra bucks and go for a LianLi you cant beat them for quality & ventilation - front USB - Variable speed fans built in - SO light - loads'a bays - + they look real fine.....
4 Also after having sh!te loads of problems with hard disks (not what you want with a server by the way), go for the 'slower' (but not noticable) 5400RPM's rather than the 7200's as the 5400's are more reliable...

The server's going to be a web/ftp/email server... Going to have forums running off of it, will have a linux or freebsd OS running it...

I expect it will get quite a bit of traffic after a bit, but I dont' want anything overkill, not for now anyways...

Thanks :)

Well, I think I'm going for the 1900 Athlon...

Will the processor and mobo work together? On newegg it doesn't say if the processor is Socket A/PGA...

I'm assuming it is, but would like to know for sure before ordering!

Thanks :)
