Will a Xbox purchased in the U.S. work in Europe?

No, it won't work. Besides the obvious voltage differences, games are formatted for the higher resolution televisions used in Europe.

If its modded you can switch NTSC/PAL, and you CAN buy an internal 220V powersupply for the XBOX, but you gotta open up your XBOX.

If you're XBOX is not modded, you're most likely SOL on NTSC/PAL deal. Some TVs can accept multiple signals... some. If you're XBOX is modded then it depends on which dashboard you use, or there is a boot disc that allows you to switch between the formats. As a side note M$ does not allow you to switch on an unmodded Xbox so that they can have seperate price markets and release dates in different countries without conflict... along the same logic for DVD regions.

Most European countries are on 210v-220v, US is 110v-120. You'll need a Step-Down Converter that is rated at least 100va/100w (same number, different companies label it differently, this number is VERY important though... anything less and you could permently dmg your xbox, at the very least it will only function for a few mintues then turn off). I'd suggest buying one before you leave the US though because the cheapest in store i've found here in France is 42Euro. Online in the states they can be had for $10-$25 US. Online here in the Europe they can be had for less than 42Euro, but internet business over here is about 5-7 years behind the US... remember internet shops 5-7 years ago? But they can be found, and shipping is a flat rate throughout the EU. Another option like sheik24 said is buying a new PSU for your Xbox, they can be found online for around $10 US or $20 US for a dual voltage version... but both require you to work inside your Xbox.

You can find Xbox's over here new for about 99Euro, i guess used could be less. I recently moved here for the summer, brought my modded Xbox... didn't get a step down converter before i left, not gonna shell out 42Euro or order parts over here JUST to play games... instead i've been going out and getting to "know" some local french cuties 🙂 But to each his own, if i was gonna be here over a year i might get the DTs for some gaming.

EDIT: If you DO buy an Xbox in Germany, your US games will not work on it unless you mod it... PAL/NTSC. Also where in Germany are you moving? I was in Munich in December, if you're into electronics there is a store called Saturn... equivalent to BB, all over the place. Germany is fun... well West Germany. Also for all kinds of XBOX info Xbox-Scene is a great place to start, and their forums are very helpful... although the FS/T section there isn't as secure as ours, the advice is solid.

woah, thanks for the great info 🙂 if its as cheap as 99 Euros, i'll get one in Europe cause its about $149 here so its about the same. i will only buy a few games in Europe (such as Forza: Motorsport) so US games don't matter... thanks for great info though

(I am moving to Gottingen, Germany) 🙂
