I am about to buy a xbox hd dvd player but need to know if it will work on a PC since I don't have an xbox 360. Also will it play at 1080p as well?

Thanks

yup the player has no problems with vista, drivers are already in place. However, you will need to get third party software to play hd content. As far as 1080p is concerned, I'm pretty sure you will have no problems.

You're going to have a ton of scaling issues with that 22" screen.

1680x1050 does not match up with 1920x1080 at all. Plus, as far as I know, no TN panels can do 1:1 pixel mapping so even 720p is going to look like a stretched mess.

I'm also buying a Sharp Aquos 46" D62U set in this week or so :p

Hence I'm buying a hddvd player :)

Any decent playback software will handle scaling to whatever output resolution he selects just fine.

Well that info would have been nice! :)

It'll play 1080p fine and it should work seamlessly on the PC.

I personally have this hd-dvd player (albeit with the 360) and I couldnt ask for more.

On second thought I think I will be going with a PS3 and it's blu ray since that is the future. Another question, for normal DVDs, do I need to buy an upconverting Dvd player or will I be able to scale it properly using FFDSHOW?

FFDShow can upconvert, but remember that with FFDShow, all the work is CPU dependent. BTW, the 360 hd-dvd player works MCE 2005 as well.

What kind of audio output does the 360 HD-DVD player have? Or is audio decoded through the software as well then output via your soundcard? Seems like the PS3 is a better standalone solution vs. the 360 HD-DVD which is highly PC/Xbox360 output dependent. Price is about the same at $399+199 vs. $599 but amazingly Xbox360 has the better titles right now.

The 360 digitally outputs either DD or DTS via its toslink output.

Here is my take on this:
I'd looked at this route before (hd-dvd on PC) but it would turn out way too expensive for me ie. hdcp video card (for me at least a 8800gts + the hd-dvd drive + $65 Powerdvd software or ~ $600) but
I chose the 360 instead which costs me much less (I bought a used 360+hd-dvd drive for $450 here AT FS/FT site) and it allows me to play new 360 games while waiting for dx-10 games on PC :(
not to mention watching hd-dvd movies on my Plasma display.:)

Right, but the 360 HD-DVD player doesn't have any toslink/digital coax outputs of its own on the unit? Its just a USB 2.0 output and thats all?

That's right.
Technically, the unit is not even a player per se.
It's just a dvd transport which has to be conneted to a hdcp pc capable system or a 360 console.
