Will a Wii U connect to my network box and play MKV's?

Im looking for a console not really for games but one that will play my MKV files, some over 20 gigs. My BR player right now chokes on anything over 6 gig large. Also my BR player doesnt list everything I have on my nas storage device. I want to get one and Im debating on a used PS3 or the Wii U. Any help in letting me know if the Wii U will play my movies would be great.

TIA!

Yeah everything else connected to it works great, but my BR player just wont show everything on my network drive and chokes, wired connection, when I try to play anything larger then 6 gigs. Just plays a few seconds then says loading. And its not a cheap BR player, its a samsung

None of the consoles can play MKV natively that I know of, they need to be converted to another container format they can play. I know a PS3 won't play them directly, I tried that in the past for some anime. I have no idea if there is any homebrew software out there for any of them that can.

are you using anything to transcode it on your bluray player? my bluray player (sony bdp3100) plays all mkv files streamed from my ps3 just fine using ps3 media server. ps3 worked the same way too. i've streamed 15gb movies no problem. everything is wired as well. the only thing that blows is trying to rewind/fastforward things and that can cause things to lock up.

just raw MKV files from my br collection. I guess Im going to look into getting a used ps3 instead

ps3 can't play raw mkv files either, as i just explained. it has to be transcoded. your bluray player can probably play them if you use software to transocde them on the fly.
