Will a VGA Silencer work if I have ramsinks installed?

I have a 9800 flashed to pro and overclocked as well. I was playing far cry today and my video got super corrupted. Looks like i need to run a little cooler 🙂 I already have ramsinks installed on both sides of the card, will an arctic cooling vga silencer still fit? Thanks

I'd look into your cases airflow... the regular radeon cooler should be enough for just about anything... Most people change coolers just to get quieter cooling.

Anyways, I have very low profile ramsinks on my r9800 pro w/ an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer. It fits. My ramsinks get blazin' ass hot though. You can't even touch them, they'll brand you.

I have a 9800 pro with a VGA silencer AND ram sinks. You will find it easier to install the ram sinks first. Also, I have the small style, just be aware that the ones directly under the vga silencer need to be a little shorter. You can still use larger heatsinks on the back of the card, and maybe on one or both of the top ones on the gpu side.

A Friend of mine has ramsinks on his but with the ramsinks he got he had to trim down the ones on the same side as the Silencer.

There's about 1.5 cm of clearance for ramsinks between the fan housing and the ram chips, that takes care of 2. The other 2 can, depending on how much they overhang the chips, be under the heatsink itself and the clearance to the heatsink is slightly less, maybe 1.4 cm. I use low profile sinks which fit fine and get cattle-prod hot personally.

Thanks for the info, How much benefit would I see if I put an 80mm fan on the side of the case right by the vid card? I have an led coolermaster laying around from buying 10 on the newegg discount. I have a Cheiftec case that looks like the antec file serve case. 2 80mm in the front, 2 80 mm in the back.


Hopefully this week I'll buy a VGA silencer and either an slk-900 or a sp-9?? for my cpu.

bump this, i'm just waiting for a reply to osubeaver's last question about the fan on the side of the case. i'm thinking about doing that, but does it really drop vpu temps that much?

I have a fan blowing in right by the vid card and I'm assuming it helps but I haven't tried o'clocking with the fan and without it blowing in.

Do I need RAMSINKS on both sides of the chips on the 9800, or just on the side with the silencer?

Also, should I use the thermal tape that came with them or do I need (or would I be better off with) something like Arctic Silver Adhesive?

There are chips on both sides so if you want the maximum performance/highest oc you need sinks on both sides. AS adhesive is great stuff but the tape is fine for this application imo. Try the tape on one ramsink, if the heatsink gets toasty, it's working fine.
