Ive got 2 spar systems with these cards in them .... Do you think i can get away with running this game with these cards

i know its not out yet but i'm in the possition where i can get new cards now for a very cheap price second hand now or never should i do it ? or will these run the game fine ?

The Specs of the systems are 1800+ Athlon for the TNT2 system and 1600+ Athlon for the G400 both with 512mb DDR 266 ram

The cards i am able to get second hand are a Geforce2 Pro 64Mb and Geforce2Ti 64Mb for $20 each :frown:

Er, no way in bloody hell a tnt2 is gonna run that thing. Even those other cards will barely squeak by if they run it at all that is. IMO, even for $20 it's still kind of a waste if you want to play HL2. If there are other games that are out now that you want to play with them though it wouldn't be too bad of a move.

MX/SE=crap. I would save up...Half-Life 2, in order to be the least bit fun, will probably require at least a ti4200, IMO, and that's with decreased detail. It's up to how much you wanna spend at this point.

The TNT2 and G400 will run like a slide show if they run at all.:frown:

The Geforce2 Pro and Ti will run it much better though you will probably have to play
at 600X480 resolution for decent frame rates.

Any Geforce 4 MX card you get for $40 will probably not run much if any better then
the GF2 Pro / Ti, It also is does not add any new features (DX7 just like the Geforce 2)
so it wouldn't be worth the extra $20.

suppposed according to the minimum requirements, but i would seriously doubt that running the game on either of those cards would be anywhere near considered "playing" the game

Bwahahahahahahaha! Are you nuts? A GeForce2 will chug in HL2. A GF3 won't be good enough for high details. Good luck!

they stated somewhere that it would be able to scale down to be playable on a gf2mx. My guess is, you would need a gf3 level card to run medium to high settings at playable framerates.(maybe 1024X768 no AA/AF)

valve stated that a directx 6 card will run it, that means TNT2 and G400, so yess, it will just look like crap

i tried playing max payne with tnt2 and it runs like crap.... like, constantly in bullet-time mode. dunno if you play at 32-x240 (if there's an option) :p

A Geforce 3 would be the minimum with lowest settings. They are what now... 50-60 dollars?

A Tnt would work, but you would be so frustrated by the un playability you would throw your game out the window.

You owe me a root beer. I just covered my screen. :p

A TnT2/G400 will barely run HL1 with the details/resolution cranked.

Maybe if you ran in 320x240 with no textures enabled and flat shading. :p

I'm pretty sure, based on what I've seen from VALVe, actually, that you need a TnL capable card to play, but I'll need to reverify that with my sources. Even if that's not the case, based on what we've seen with HL2, I'd probably steer away from both of the cards you have listed here.

The TnT2m64 was the "MX" of the TnT2 series. It's one of the worst performing cards ever and I wouldn't even put it in the same class as the TnT2. The G400? Forget it. I'd ditch the m64, but keep the G400 for work station use. At least the 2D quality with the Matrox is worth keeping around for.

ya, i can barly keep it above that with my 9700pro, but i have a feeling valve will do a much better job on scaleing the graphics. however, i still would recomend upgradeing the cards in question if you want to enjoy the graphics of hl2 at all.

Will Half-life run well at 1600*1200 on my Voodoo1 4mb? Or will Doom 3 for that matter? :BWAHAHAHAHA D:beer:

Those cards are ancient. I wouldn't even try to run any kind of modern game except Half-Life or Counterstrike at really low settings on either of those cards. The minimum gaming card you should buy right now is a Ti4200/R8500.

Get a geforce3 or radeon 8500 for like 50 dollars and it will be playable at some settings. If you want to spend about $100 a ti4200 would definately be able to run it alright.

I would recommend a Ti4200 - 64Mb as well or maybe a GF3 Ti200/500 still. I have a GF4 Ti4200 128Mb card on an Athlon XP 2500+ (overclocked to 2.2Ghz / 400Mhz FSB) / Abit NF7-S Rev2 system and I can run games perfectly fine and I will definitely expect HL2 to run smoothly. I can run Splinter Cell at 1024x768 and it runs smooth too...no jerkiness. I am not sure why that one guy can't get his 9700 Pro to run it well...because I would think that a 9700 Pro should run it very well.
