Never mind having more pins than holes, the AM2 CPUs have a memory controller for DDR2. Socket 939 motherboards sport DDR.

Unfortunately there is no viable upgrade path for lost and abandoned socket 939 sufferers.

anybody know why AMD had to switch to a completely different socket to continue the X2 series? intel seemed to continue just fine with the 775. i know newer chips won't go on older boards, but still...

So w/ the pentium series... why did intel have to change sockets? I mean.. PI, II, III, IV..?

As mentioned, one reason is that since the AMD CPUs have the memory controller onboard, switching from DDR to DDR2 RAM necessitated at least some changes to the socket. Intel CPUs have the memory controller in the north bridge, so the CPU can keep the same socket even while the north bridge is modified to handle DDR2 instead of DDR.

If you are thinking about upgrading your laptops motherboard then forget it. You will not be able to upgrade it you will need to buy a new system.
