Will a socket A T-Bird work in the new socket A Motherboards

I have an AMD Athalon T-bird 1 Ghz and I want to upgrade to a kt-400/Nforce 2 board and some ddr. I will eventually upgrade the CPU but dont have enough for it now. But I just want to make sure it will work, I am pretty sure it will. The boards are socket A and so is the CPU.

My guess is NO, because they require a GOB of voltage to run wich these new boards are not designed to supply. You can get a new CPU for like $45... they overclock to well over 2.2GHz.

t-birds are paperweights.

I think a friend of mine did it, but not sure (that friend is MIA right now 😛). But as Whitedog said, an new CPU (XP 1700+) will be like 45.

If you have a mobo manufacturer in mind, check their website for CPU/Mobo compatibility. Here is the link for Asus and MSI. From what I can tell, yes, it will work.

yeah, it works. for kicks, i put a duron (spitfire) in a nForce2 mobo and it worked, so i assume a t-bird would work too.

Interesting... my mistake. For some reason I was thinking those older chips required 2.2 volts or something... maybe I was thinking of PIII? 😱

My old t-bird is Still a paperweight though. 😀

Ya i was planning on getting a 1700+ (maybe even spring for the better steppings) not long after i got the mobo i just wanted to make sure it would work with my T-Bird. Most mobos I look at say will work with AMD Athalon/XP/Duron.

Thnx,
Luke😎
