Will A Serial IR remote work over Parallel?

I want to get one of these for my laptop, but its a serial connection, and I dont have a serial port. I was wondering if anyone knew if attempting to connect it to the parallel port with an adapter would do anything, or if using my laptops built in IR port would work. It needs a Com port... so Im thinking no, but <shrug>.
