Will a SATAII drive work on a SATA controller?

Need a SATA hard drive. The new SATAII drives are cheaper than the older ones. VIA chipset for skt 754 shuttle.

Will the new drives work okay?

Yes it will work, you might have to set some jumpers but SATAII is supposed to be backward compatible.
