Will a Retail Intel Socket 370 HS/F work on an AMD cpu?

Anyone happen to know this? i have an amd motherboard, a duron 800 cpu, but my heatsinks and fans won't arrive for another 5 days.

Has anyone tried this?

ive been using amd heatsinks on my p3... i'm sure its ok... just make sure it could handle the load... and it doesn't crush your core.

Thanks for the reply. I never owned an amd setup before, and i do know that the CPU's are pretty fragile and have the ability to burn up if the hs/f isn't on right... I read that the core crushing thing only because a problem on the cpus that were 1ghz and higher?

One thing not to forget about--the PIII produces almost no heat compared to an AMD. Many Intel machines don't even use a fan on the heatsink. The PIII HS/fan may not have the capacity to cool the Duron. I would wait.

^^ Depends on the HSF, but be vary careful. Many AMD Athlon/Duron cores would get crushed by S370 coolers. For example, the S370 Thermaltake Golden Orb coolers would crush AMD Athlons.

Does your duron have the 4 "feet" on it (the squishy pads on the corners)? If not, then I definately would not use a Socket 370 cooler - the core is in serious jeopardy.

I would do it. Iwould do the following first. Make sure you have a good fan, noise is not a concern here. Make sure the heatsink mounts properly. You might have to take the mainboard out of the case to be able to see it edge on. On start up, go into BIOS and watch the temps until they stabilize. With a decent fan and good contact, there should be no issues.

Some s370 heatsinks have a lip on either side and one such gave me problems on a P3 so off came those lips.

You only have to keep the Duron below what? 80 degrees Celsius? For how long? 5 days? I bet it doesn't get near 60 degrees if the heatsink is mounted well and with a good fan. Don't forget the obligatory thermal goo.

I have a Retail Duron 800 and the heatsink was warped from the factory. Even after lapping, I could see a depression in the center. The springclip was anemic in the pressure it applied. I used it on a P3 900 for a couple of years. Radio Shack sold an identical heatsink for socket 370 at the time.

You can pencil trick the bridges on that Duron and run it at 133mhz bus.😀
