Will a r9 290 run well on a 700w PSU?

I read that it will require a 750w psu but will it run on a 700w? I don't want to spend money on a new GPU then find out it doesn't run well.

You are fine. Check my sig. My computer uses 500w max @ the wall running the Furmark power virus.

EDIT: The amperage on the rail(s) you do need to check that your PSU can provide it.

Sure. I ran one with a SeaSonic 560W gold rated power supply and it did great.

700w is more than enough. I ran a 290 on my 8350 system with a seasonic 550w gold rated psu. It hit 440-450w while gaming.

I've run massively overclocked dual 290s on a 750W (Seasonic X series) so you should be fine with a quality 700W.

I run a 290x on a 650W PSU. Of course, you should purchase a good PSU but you should be doing that anyway. The PSU limits are always way overstated...i think they do that because some people buy junk PSU's and they need to cover their butts

The following PSUs of 700(+) watts may not be able to run it:

Local/Generic/El cheapo crappy brands
Entry level/low end cooler master
Maybe entry level antec. Not sure about this one.

The following PSUs should be fine even if less than 700w:

High end cooler master
Any 650+ seasonic/corsair

And so on

We need details of your exact psu model.

Or, believe it or not, a Rosewill Fortress 650.

OC a 290 and my cpu on a 750w corsair for years no issues.
700w will be fine if its a quality psu even if you OC.

Hit or miss, they have a few quite good quality ones for great prices, and a few average to bad quality ones. Depends on what OEM makes the model before it gets the Rosewill badge.

I was using a Rosewill Capstone 450W with my 290 during the mining craze for awhile 24/7 without any issues.

It's kind of weird they put 750W as the requirement. When I talked to Sapphire tech support about using a Tri-X OC 290 on my Antec Neo Eco 620C (576W on the +12V rail, Seasonic OEM) they said it would be fine.

I agree. I wonder if the 750W was really the min for R9 290 CF?

I'm running 2x290s and a 2600k @ 4.8ghz on my 750w plati rated psu

Edit: I was wrong, my OLD psu was a PC Power & Cooling silencer original 750watt, and it ran everything fine with CPU at 4.6ghz. I now run a XFX 850watt.

I have mine on an XFX 750 watt Gold; but I lowered the perf settings in AMD overdrive; no issues.
