Will a PIII Golden Orb HS/Fan work with the Tually IHS? *Update* - NO!

The Orb is a ROUND HS and doesn't quite cover the SQUARE Integrated Heat Spreader of my Tualatin Celeron.

Will it work OK - does the entire heat spreader need to be covered? Or should I just stick with the Retail HS that comes with the PIII?

Does it matter if the corner's edges stick out beyond the HS? I'd say more than 90% of the IHS is covered by the Orb.

IMHO no problem...perhaps it is not the "perfect solution", but as long as the middle of the spreader (where the cpu core is) is covered completely...

My Alpha PEP66 also misses some millimeters on one side of the spreader...no side effects so far... 🙂

Thanks, I figured it might be OK if not ideal since it is removing most of the heat off the core . . . I guess there is only one way to be sure . . . I'll try it tonight.

NO, DON'T USE THE GOLDEN ORB FOR FC-PGA ON FC-PGA2!!
For starters, Golden Orb is pretty weak a heatsink, the retail intel HSF is much better,
also, the heigth for FC-PGA's core is different from the FC-PGA2, so if you force the Orb
onto Tually, you are facing either the danger to crash the cpu core, break the socket,
or not evenly attached surface...

You're right! I tried it (before your post) and it won't lock down without excessive force. The retail PIII HS worked fine, however (I guess the clips are more flexible to fit over the IHS's extra thickness). Actually, the Orb wasn't that bad of a HS for the PIII . . .
