Will a PCI Express x1 work in a PCI-E x4 slot?

Hi My mobo has only one PCI Express x1 slot and its already taken. I need another PCI-E x1 card...basically a cheap PCI Express x1 ethernet card. if I buy one and stick it in the r PCI-E x4...will it work or are they not compatible? Please advise. Thanks.
