Will a PCI-e 2.0 work in my Mobo?

I know pci-e 2.0 is supposed to be backwards compatible, but I have heard a number of problems about it only being so with 1.1 and I think my board is only 1.0

Anyway, my 7600GT has sh!t the bed. Two capacitors have ruptured (and yet oddly the card is still working, though every other day or so I get some trouble in reboot)

DOes anyone have thoughts on whether I can slap an Asus 8800GS in the machine and not want to cry and or tear my hair out?

And yes, I know there are not too many 8800GS lovers out there, but Im not a heavy gamer, so I think it should do.

Thank you smart people for your opinions. :)

ps. While I said the 7600 is still working, I'd like to get it out of there before it fails completely.

Yes it's backwards compatible. You should see a drastic change with the upgrade.

I know they are supposed to be backwards compatible, but I think in practice they often aren't.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this mobo and a 2.0?

I had a 8800gs before the GTS. My Asus was same old P965 board as your DS3 board. There isn't a performance difference between PCI-E 2.0 and 1.0 other than maybe SLI or crossfire. If there was it would be less than 1fps difference.

8800gs was very good performer.

@ 1920x1080 Crysis high dx9 I was getting 23FPS compared to my g92 8800gts 29fps.

I would suggest a BIOS flash to the latest available before swapping cards. I have seen problems on various motherboards with G92 video cards over the last year, a BIOS update has always fixed it but that first boot with the new card installed & no video signal detected message is frustrating.

EDIT: Which revision of the DS3 do you have? I think there were three, I had the 1.0 model (paired with a first-gen e6400) and it had some major issues (poor memory compatibility, didn't like G92, poor voltage control -> lousy OC performance). I was much happier when I upgraded to an Abit IP35-e, after a year of fighting my mobo everything just worked (and my OC went up nicely).

I'm currently using a 9800GTX+ 2.0 card with GA-965P-DS3 rev 1.0, works fine. Currently using F12 Bios.

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the responses.

@Denithor- My old invoice says its a v 1.3, but Sisoft identifies it as a 1.4, if there ever was such a thing. Hopefully that suggests that I'll be in the clear. And I'll deifitely flash the bios before the install. Sisoft says Im siting at A3! I guess thats what happens when you are computer lazy like me :)
