Will this motherboard SAFELY support this RAM?

MSI K8N Platinum nForce3 250 (Socket 754) Motherboard (MB-022-MS)

With....

Corsair 1GB DDR XMS3200XL Platinum TwinX (2x512MB) CAS2 (MY-049-CS)
A matched pair of 512MB XMS3200XL Extreme Low Latency (2-5-2-2) memory modules - 1GB total - ideal for dual DDR motherboards.

Is the motherboard capable of supporting this DUAL DDR safely? Will the temperatures be okay?

Socket 754 does NOT support Dual Channel DDR. You have to get a 939 to do that.

Even still you only get 2-5% anyways. Not worth it.

The A64 will run hotter than a P4. It is fast though. I got an A64 3200+ on a Soltek nForce 3 250Gb board. Nice and fast.

The "Matched Pair" of DDR means that they were tested to work well in a dual channel setup. Those will work fine in that motherboard. I actually have that ram except I have the 3200XLPT (Just has platinum heatsinks for cheaper) The reason I got them is so when I do decided to upgrade to 939 I will already have the ram I need for the dual channel and I'll be able to overclock it to whatever the board supports at that time (I believe these chips were able to hit something like 500mhz).

What's the better 754 MOBO for me to get?

ASUS K8VSE or MSI K8N Platinum nForce3 250?

Thanks

you can OC the MSI but not the ASUS due to the AGP lock.

The Corsair RAM will work fine in the MSI no probs

I'm going to ditch the 1GB Corsair and go with just the Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200XL Platinum now anyway.

It is more cost effective.

Do you think it is likely i would need more RAM than a 512 at 2-2-2-5 can offer me?

I run a few app's at the same time, like file sharing programmes while playing games, do you think it would handle that?

Thanks

I have the ASUS board and its working splendid so far, everything is smooth and stable, I had the MSI board in mind, but i read alot of reviews and the board isnt that stable. Some MSI boards are ok and are perfectly alright, but i wanted to be on the safe side so I went with the ASUS K8V-SE DLX.

anyway, when picking out your ram, i hear the MSI board is really fussy about RAM and even corsairs have difficulty keeping stable, if your getting ram i think MSI boards are good with kingstons.

I forgot to add, the ASUS board is not so good at OCing..so if u plan on OCing, maybe get a msi or abit board.

Just check compatibility lists for the different memory mnufacturers. I got the K8N NEO specifically because it's listed as compatible with my DS Mushkin Basic.

If you want cost effective, get Corsair Value Select... you won't tell the difference between the VS and the XL... and it'll be quite nice to have the extra cash for anything you want.

Just my two cents...

Or it could be your two cents... and then some.

No it doesn't. My ex P42.8C(Northwood) ran at 45C idle and my A64 3400+ is at 40C. Do u have Cool and quiet enabled? Anyway even if you don't the retail HSF of A64 is very sufficient for the core.

Are you sure?

I was interested in the value select (1gb of it), but thought that for the price of that i could get 512 XL and that would outperform it with it's 2-2-2-5.

What's the thought?

Statistically, yes, the XL will outperform the value select (if it's equal, i.e. 512mb VS : 512mb XL), and for that price it should. BUT it isn't that much of a noticable difference to the human brain and eye, this is what I've come to gather form my experiences with Corsair's VS, XMS, and XMS XL, and also my current Geil VS. 1GB of VS will outperform 512mb of XL, though. So that should be the incentive.

If you have the means, and you really want that extra fraction of speed, get the XL, but any A64 rig will run excellently with Value RAM... it doesn't need low latency RAM to operate smoothly.

My pc has an A64 3000+ and Geil PC3200 at 2.5-3-3-6 and everything loads and runs soooo smoothly. I only have 512mb right now and applications and hot new games run without a problem.

It's really up to you, but with the money you save you could put it into a better CPU/mobo or graphics card, that's what I would do.

Hope this helps,

Ian

EDIT: You have the MSI K8N Platinum listed as your motherboard, I haven't found any with the model number of MB-022-MS, I could be understanding this wrongly though. My MSI K8N Neo Platinum is an MS-7030... possibly the UK model number? I'm assuming you're in the UK from your forum name.

Ian- It's off overclockers.co.uk

Thanks for the advice.

I may just go for 512 of GEIL value or Corsair value.

Does the 1GB really make that much of a difference? I suppose it is only needed if you are running DOOM 3 at the same time Photoshop, and ten other programmes!

I would definitely get memory off mb compatlbility list.A64's can be very picky on memory.Cas latency doesn't matter much with memory controller built in cpu. They run fine and fast with cas 3.Kingston value ram works fine in my system but I'm using Gigabyte K8vnxp mb.And as far as temps 64's run pretty cool.I idle at 32 to 34 and and full load rarely hits 44.

I have the K8N platinum mobo and I like it a lot so far... great for overclocking. No stability issues and it works perfectly with my Corsair XMS Twinx Ram (PC3200) 2x512.
