Will a motherboard post without a CPU?

I was wondering because when I turned on my computer a few days ago(after dusting it out) i heard a loud pop  I immediately shut the computer off and check for any physical damage to the components. When i found nothing, I plugged it back in and it seems that my AGP slot is no longer working :( Eventhough the graphics card was in the slot, there was nothing being oututted on the monitor (it would say that it was connected but had no signal). So I tried the graphics card in a different mobo and it is working fine. However, when I plugged in another graphics card in the damaged? mobo, it would not work :( (BTW, the sytem was running on an Epox 8kHA+, 512Mb crucial 2100 RAM, and an ATI AIW 8500 graphics card). I dont think it is a problem with the PS or the RAM, as I tested them in other systems without a problem. The motherboard also has the usual postcode of FF, so I do not know what is wrong. I havent tried to remove the processor from the mobo to try it in another one, but I was wondering if the mobo would ouput anything to the monitor without a CPU?

If I remove your brain will you still be able to function? Not likely unless you're a chicken.

The popsound usually is associated with a blown capacitor. Could be one in the power chain that feeds your AGP slot.

LOL....things can get very sarcastic in here at times ;)

Sounds like either motherboard or PSU.....

I like that low level CPU idea, I mean how much value does something like a P100 have now? $1??

could probably even use a 286cpu for the bios level. though i'm sure it'd get to the point where people will be overclocking it and then it will be just as important as the system cpu ^_^

I dunno......... seems like something else to break, create more circuitry, and jack the price of the board up. I think the inclusion of diagnostic leds on some boards was serving the same purpose.

If your savvy enough to interpret them :p

I bet 50% of the people that have diagnostic LED's have no idea wtf they are for.
