Will a mobile p4 (not P-M or P4-M) work on a socket 478 motherboard?

I'm wondering if a mobile pentium 4 (SL726) can work in a standard desktop motherboard. Note that this is a Mobile Pentium 4 CPU, not a Pentium M or a Mobile Pentium 4 - M CPU. 478 pins, 1.3V, 533 FSB. Any info is much appreciated.

Well, now, Mobile P4-based Celerons seem to work just fine on a number of socket 478 mobos, so I can't imagine why a Mobile P4 wouldn't do the same.

Elaborate, please. Why won't it work? P4-M's work, as do mobile celerons based on the Northwood core. Why not the mobile version of the northwood?

I'm not doubting you, I just want concrete information. Thanks!

Isnt it just a P4 with a lower voltage? So it was labelled P4-M and used as a mobile chip? If thats true it should work fine on desktop mobos.

I have previously heard that Mobile P4s will work, but they will downclock to SpeedStep low speed (on the multiplier level) and not be recognized correctly by your board.

Not 100% sure, but I think Ive heard it before.

It would make sense, as then the Celerons would work, because they dont use SpeedStep.

No, no, the Speedstep stuff will just cause the mobile P4 to run at 12x multiplier all the time. It will still run.

they work in some motherboards, not in others. my mobile pentium 4 is running happily inside an ASUS Pundit (which contains a socket 478 motherboard with SiS chipset). There's a great thread here on using mobile celerons in desktop boards, I assume any board that runs a mobile celeron will also take a mobile pentium 4.
