Will a mini CD play in a slot-load optical drive?

Just wondering if one of these or similar would play in a slot load device. Someone said tonight that they will not work and will remain lodged inside the drive, requiring the device to be dismantled for repair. What's the real deal?

They should, there is an indentation for them in most if not all drives...

wait you said slot load... if you mean like the kind where you push in the cd and it "eats" it then no, I would imagine it would not work.

Yeah, they play fine in the normal tray-load drive like you said because of the inner depression.

The debate was whether the slot-load had the capability to "eat" them and play, or would they get horribly stuck...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Unless your drive specifically states that it can play them, "someone" is right on the money.

I wouldn't even try it. Only bad things could come out of sticking such a little thing in a big slot.

Funny thing, if I had a spare slot-load, I would do this just to see the extent of the damage.

what i hate is how expensive these minis are ... if they were reasonably priced, i would use them all the time to carry around important files or mail stuff to friends etc....

Holy old thread resurection!

Why not use a USB drive for carrying files?

Actually the new Plextor slot load drive claims it can accept both 8cm and 12cm discs.

I have some mini-sized DVDs that came in a cereal box, they're about half the diameter of a normal DVD. They work just fine in the slot-load drive on my PowerBook G4 and on my grandpa's Mac Mini. I think the internal mechanism is designed for both sizes. Both machines used Panasonic/Matsuchita (something like that) brand drives internally.

I hope you were joking. If he tied a string to it and it actually spun the disk up the string would definitely get wrapped around the spindle inside the drive. Do not tie a string to it.

Wow! I didn't even know about that drive. I can't find pics, but the specs look amazing! Thanks for the heads up!

hahahahaha Glad I'm not the only one who thought that suggestion was bad.
