409 stainless might be low grade but it is still stainless. All they do is add a fair amount of chromium to the steel so that you get Austentite at room temperatures and higher carbon contents.

The reason they call it stainless is simple . . the Chromium on the very outer layer oxides into a very very strong compound (strong chemically) that prevents the underlying iron from oxidizing (rusting) and also protects it from just about all chemical attacks (stainless will be completely unnafected by acids that would eat right through normal steel.).

However, I can't remember if it is ferromagnetic or not. There are many phases steel exists in and I cant remember whether Austentite is ferromagnetic or not.

H2S2O7 (Nordhausen) will completely destroy stainless steel in seconds.

last I knew aluminized was just regular steel with some sort of outer aluminum coating. most of the time they dont even do the welds and it rots just as quickly...

Oh and whoever said a magnet sticks to a lobster is full of sh!t! That little bastard pinches hard! Too bad it wasn't one of those big ass ceramic magnets from a black widow guitar speaker 'cause that critter would have been a dead crush-station!

I bought a magnaflow muffler used and then had it on my car for 6+ months, not a single problem. It as actually welded quite well.

My friend GF just got a Magnaflow 14815 muffler put on (dual 3" tips), and it sounds nice (thankfully her OEM exhaust system comes with a resonator).
The aluminized magnaflow's look like "metal", whereas the stainless ones pretty much always look polished/chrome like.

very true. This is why I was thrown off.
