Will a laptop bought in the USA work in the UK?

My friend just bought a Dell and soon she's going to college in England. She asked if the laptop would work out there, isn't the voltage different over there?

Thanks for any help.

It'll work. The adapters made in recent years go from 100 to 240v. You made need a plug adapter tho as some places have different leads.

Do make sure though. Look at the label on the laptop's power supply. It'll say "Input" - and there'll be a listing of voltages it'll accept. Best to be sure rather than risk a smoking power brick.

Should only need the plug adapter, not an actual transformer. If it's new then it will almost certainly work with the higher voltage. Even 5 year old laptops will almost always work. If she's going to school there full time and not just for a semester abroad you might consider getting a new power cable to prevent the irritation of carrying the adapter.

BTW if she needs to input that pounds symbol, she'll need to remap it, i dont think its on the number "4" key.. forgot.. a few keys are different

Yeah I highly recommend buying from the US.

I just got myself a high-spec Toshiba Satellite latop for around £700. When in the UK they want around £1200!!!!!

Everything works on it, exept the pound symbol, but who cares. Just open a word processor program (e.g. Microsoft Word) and go to insert symbol.

😀😀
