I have a 15" viewsonic lcd. 1024 x 768 maximum native resolution at 60Hz is what it says for the product features.
When I go to my monitor settings, and check the box that says "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display". It would allow me to go up to 75Hertz, if I don't check the box, it would go up to 120. Will it damage my lcd if I set it to 75Hertz instead of 60? If I set it on 60Hertz and play games, will that damage my lcd? What should I set my refresh rate to?

as high as it runs

I run my Sony monitors @100hz. Uncheck the box and just try the higher levels, if screen goes black DO NOT TOUCH anything , 15secs it will go back. Whatever you do , do not shut down or reboot when screen goes black, windows will remember it will have a hard time getting your refresh fixed, I tried safemode and ended up taken me a couple hours, I tried everything from driver uninstall or new cards, I had to take it out to my TV and use the Svideo cable then went in and changed it back. For all who would think there was a better way, trust me I tried it.

Some monitors if you lower th resolution enough you can get up to higher refresh like 85-100hz. Get good ones like Sony's and can hit 120hz at 1024.

Refreash rate means nothing on a LCD compared to a CRT. Reaction time on the other hand , does.
