Will a GPS benefit from a high speed SD card (as compared to normal speed ones)?

Friend bought a GPS recently, wants to add memory. He's thinking about getting a high speed SD card to support more maps, but I was wondering if it really needs it or would he just be wasting $$$?

I mean benefit from buying a high speed SD vs. a regular one; I know he'll benefit from adding memory in general.

No, its a waste. The main benefit of faster cards for most people are the quicker read/write of the data to start with. Assuming he is only going to be loading maps once and leaving it be for a year until they are updated I am not seeing much benefit.

What's the marginal difference in cost? If it's cheap, go higher speed, could always repurpose the card -- esp if it's an 8 gig -- into a portable HD cam.
