Will a GF2 GTS work with the newer Intel 845E or 845G chipsets?

Going to upgrade fairly soon here, but I saw something on Tom's Hardware's review of some 845E boards saying that you can't use an older, AGP 2x card in an AGP 4x slot, that because they took higher voltages, they could damage the board.

Will my GTS work on either the Gigabyte GA-8IEXP or the Epox 4g4A+? Thanks !

AFAIK, the GF2 should work in the i845 series of motherboards. As a frame of reference, the Voodoo 5 couldn't work in the i850 because the V5 was designed for 3.3V, the i850 only supplied 1.5V(I belive the V5 wouldn't even fit, due to notches). However, the GeForce2 ran it fine. Nothing has changed recently that should make this untrue, so the GF2 should work in the i845.

I just ordered a GF4 from newegg not even a minute ago . I decided to go that direction as opposed to the total processor upgrade, which I'll probably do a year from now. 1.3ghz is fast enough for now

I can't say 100% certain, you'll have to check Gigabyte's site or contact them for that. But GF2GTS are AGP2.0 AGP4x cards and as such should work in all mobos newer than the ancient AGP1.0 spec.

However do consider upgrading, things have moved on HUGELY since GTS days and newer cards like GF4MX and Rad7500/9000 give much better perf, image quality, TVout, dual display etc and are available from around $60. If your CPU is over 800mhz then it is well worth considering the Rad8500LE or GF3TI200 for under $100, these are not only fast and better in all depts than GTS but also like Rad9000 cards sport FULL DX8 hw functions which will become VERY important in newer games and are alsready VERY useful in many current games too.

EDIT: Whoaa ... those posts were quick! Yes 1.3ghz is still mighty fine and certainly capable of getting great perf out of DX8 cards like GF4TI (please tell me you got a TI).

Definatly a Ti, a Ti4200 actually. I read your post in another thread about how some overclock pretty easily, so I decided to go with the 4200 (newegg was out of the 4400 I was going to get earlier). No MX for me, I've already got a GF2
