Hi folks,
In one of the computers I put together from second-hand parts, the fan of the 8500GT video card is about to give up the ghost. It's quite loud and distracting.
It would be too much of a hassle to buy a new fan, so I'm thinking about modding the card to accept passive cooling. I know that there are/were several 8500GT models on the market with passive cooling only, so I hope the GPU will lend itself to this type of heat dissipation.
I had the same problem many years ago with a Geforce 2 GTS, and ended up installing a passive Zalman ZM-NB47J aluminum heatsink ( http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16835118214 ) on it.
Do you guys think something like the Zalman would be enough, or should I look into adapting a bigger heatsink? perhaps an old Socket 370 cooler?
The people who will receive this computer are not gamers; they'd be using this as a HTPC.
