Will a GA-EX58-UD5 fit in a Lian Li PC-A70A?

Hello guys and girls,

I've just had a very worrying thought that the UD5, which I want to buy. Thankfully I haven't placed the order yet. I think it may not fit in my Lian li A70A case because of the PSU being in the way.

Here's a picture of my case (with my old components fitted to give you an idea of the space available):

Note that I have a MCR-320 rad in the top of the case, so the PSU cannot be fitted there.

And a picture of the GA-EX58-UD5:

I have the following:
1x PCI Happauge (sp?) Primo TV card
1x PCI BT Voyager 1040 Wireless card
1x PCI-E Soundblaster XFi sound card
1x PCI-E HD4870 X2 graphics card (dual slot)

btw by my reckoning the UD5 can use up to 8 slots on the back plate, yet the Lian li and quite a few other cases only have 7; if you have tri-Xfire then the bottom most dual slot graphics card overhangs the bottom of the MB and presumably requires an eighth slot on the back plate. wtf

Am I just being stupid or are my concerns correct about this MB not fitting in my case? I know that the X58 MBs are slightly bigger than the ATX standard.

If it doesn't fit, then I'm going to be p*ssed off - that's why I bought a full tower case, so I wouldn't have to worry about space issues and components not fitting.

Another problem is that I have two PCI cards and I know that if I install the HD4870 X2 in either of the top two PCI-E x16 slots then I will be covering one PCI slot. Oh well, I guess I'll have to replace the TV card (its getting old now any way - USB is the way to go).

I'm hoping to buy a second X2 eventually as well; good bye Wireless card 🙂

You can pick up a Hauppauge 1800, which is a PCIe x1 HDTV Tuner.

And it should fit, but in Tri-Fire, you'd need an 8-slot case or use a single-slot card in the bottom slot. But the UD5 should fit. Mainly, it's slightly larger on the RAM side (for the 6-slots) and you have plenty of room in that direction. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

Why can't you put the PSU at the top of the case where there is a slot for it?

The Swiftech rad is located in the top of the case.

I made sure that the rad was positioned as far back as possible to the rear of the case, so that I would leave as much clearance as possible for the front 5.25" drive bays.

Thanks PCTC2. I was only wanting to do dual-Xfire, so I can live with that. The main thing is that the MB will fit inside without hitting the top of the PSU.

Should be fine. It's about the same amount of space below the 7th slot as any other motherboard (IDE connectors, USB, etc) and should fit.
