Will a firewall work on a NETWORK machine?

Hi,

I'm on a network at home - where the modem is on another computer. If i get a firewall (a decent one, if anyone can recommend one) and install it on MY machine.. will it block out attacks to my computer ? Or do i need to install the program on the machine that has the internet connection?

im pretty sure you want it on your machine. The ideal setup is like this:

PC with Modem in --> Server with Firewall Software --> Workstation (your PC)

I have the same setup. Two PCs, one has the modem, the other accesses the net via it. I have my firewall software installed on the machine with the modem. The fact that you are accessing the net via a network does actually offer some level of protection anyway...
 
May I know why you wanted the firewall on YOUR machine but not the one with the modem on it? Unless you don't trust the other machines on your network.
 
You should have the firewall on the PC that's exposed to the Internet - the one with the modem. Try Zone Alarm, it's well respected and also free. There's no harm in having a firewall on every PC in the local network, but it's not nearly as important as firewalling the "proxy" PC.
