Will a faster HD help in this situation?

I got a Thinkpad T42P (1.86 P-M 80GB 5400rpm hitachi 1.5GB ram). I'm trying to transfer files from one external firewire drive to another external firewire drive via a PCMCIA firewire card. Will a faster laptop hd (7200rpm) improve transfer rates between these drives or do I have to look into something else?

Are you copying the files to the laptop's HD first, or directly transferring them between the two external drives? I would think that if you are doing a direct transfer, the laptop's hard drive should have very little to do with it.

If you are transfering the files directly from 1 external drive to another, then it's not accessing the internal drive, so no it wouldn't speed things up at all.

I didn't realize there was a direct bridge between two external drives. I thought the computer cached the data temporarily in the local hd before transferring to the destination drive.
