Will a external DVD drive work with a new PC build?

I want to save money and already have this drive http://www.google.com/product_...A&gl=us&hl=en&sa=title.

Now if I buy pc parts will its USB be detected and work to install my stuff,or do I have to buy a internal?

If the mb supports booting from a usb drive (most now do), it will work.
