Will a DIMM of the upcoming DDR SDRAM work in an SDR MOBO?

Nope, both have different Pin Counts. They are both physically the same size, but the DDR stuff have, I belive, about 20 more pins.

I thought that DDR can't work in SDR mobos but that SDR can work in DDR mobos./?

Some chipsets coming out will have support for sdram as well, namely Ali's, but different sockets will need to be used on the motherboard, and I doubt you can use sdr and ddr at the same time. The amd 760 will not feature support for sdram at all.

Why would you want to? Micron is selling DDR cheaper than SDRAM. They are ramping production up big time, especially since they are releasing thier OWN DDR chipset for the P3 (And it will kick the crap out of the VIA chipset)

Does MSI make a motherboard that will accept the new DDR yet? For Pentium III?

Glad I waited to upgrade!

What is the expected price of the motherboards coming out that will accept the new Ram type?
And when are they expected to be widely available, etc..

The Athlon DDR boards should start trickling out within a month, probably reaching very good volumes by before christmas.

The P3 DDR boards will be a few months delayed, most likely starting to trickle out just around christmas.

Be aware, DDR won't provide as big an advantage on a P3 platform! The STL+ bus is limited to a speed of 100*8 = 800MB, or 133*8 = 1064MB of bandwidth.. DDR will provide 1600 and 2100MB, which obviously is more than can be fed to the CPU! Now, this is not exactly wasted, as the AGP card can take up some of the slack as well, but it's not nearly as nice a situation as the EV6 bus, which will be synchronously matched to the ram.

DDR has only 1 notch instead of 2 as well.

It looks like all the platforms will eventually migrate to DDR, then QDR.

I just need some additional RAM now, and was hoping it would be compatible with the future MOBOs. Like many folks, I tend to upgrade in stages whenever I can.

Thanks Remnant..

I'll do my research. I was thinking of upgrading. It will be interesting to see what comes about next Spring.

I might go ahead and pop for a CPU Pent III upgrade for now (fairly cheap to get near the 1Ghz mark). But hold off on on a new motherboard and Ram till I see whats coming out.

Thanks.

Well, Intel will be pushing GTL+ to 200 MHz eventually, but thats still a way into the future.
