I'm an Air Traffic Controller. Prior to my arrival at this site, it was receiving intermittent issues with the radio frequencies. Many months later involving thousands of dollars spent, Transport Canada pinpointed a guy using an illegal cordless (or cell phone, second hand story is not clear) phone 50km away from the airport. He said he bought the phone on Ebay and didn't think it'd be a problem.

As you can imagine, the fines were likely very hefty.

Don't assume a phone will work in a foreign country (not the frequency part, which is silly). We took phones to Japan, and they screwed up our line while connected to the jack. They did work most of the time, but they produced some strange results. Finally, the American phones were all disconnected because they interfered with the DSL we had connected.

The Japanese phone we bought was actually pretty cool, though expensive. The amusing part was that we could NOT change the answering machine greeting -- it was a nice Japanese woman's voice saying something EXTREMELY polite about how sorry we were to have inconvenienced the caller with our inability to answer the phone. We had a local look through the manual, and there was no function for recording our own message. Silly Japanese politeness!
