Will a better router improve wired speeds?

Hey y'all I currently am running a Dlink dir-655 with a 20/2mb cable package and think the router maybe dying. I've been getting disconnected from the PlayStation network on a daily basis while playing Black Ops 2 online. It would connection interrupt me outta the lobby, then cut me from the network. I'm able to sign back in within about a min but it's annoying. I was at first thinking it too much wireless traffic on the network from my in-laws, but the problem was still happening when I changed the p/w on them. Only way it's been working steady was to take the router right outta the loop and wire right to the modem. The modem is an older Doc sis 2 and am waiting for a Doc sis 3. What i'm thinking is upgrading to an Asus rt-ac66u but am wondering if it will only improve wireless speeds, or even things hardwired to it.
Thanks in advance for your input.

is the PS3 hardwired or wireless? If it's hardwired, try replacing the ethernet cable(s). If it's wireless, then it could be due to a multitude of reasons. Do you have a laptop to test with? You could play streaming radio, and see if it glitches when the PS3 disconnects.
(Not Pandora though, because it buffers the entire song.)

It is hardwired and i've replaced the cable from modem to router, and router to ps3 still did it. Everything else works fine only does this when i'm gaming. My isp told me my modem wasn't dropping offline at all at first was showing lots of ethernet disconnects, and then just told me some kinda t3 and t4 communication errors he said was odd. Said something like it was trying to command it to switch channels and wasn't able to. I had dropped from the 20mb to the 15mb over the weekend to see if that helped but 2 maps into gaming I got dropped. Hoping to get a new modem early this week to see if that fixes it. I'm also wondering if it's a ps3 problem like my ethernet port. Between yesterday and today though I haven't been dropped. Maybe just a heat issue with lots of wireless traffic and gaming at the sametime. I keep my router and modem in the lower drawer enclosed in my tv stand.

Your problem isn't speeds but stability. It's possible the Asus will fix that.

On Saturday I used some longer Ethernet cables so I could move my router towards the front of the drawer for more circulation and its worked fine. I also finally got my new modem today and after a could hrs of gaming still no problem. Not sure if my in-laws have discovered the wireless network back up yet but happy things are working as of now.
