I am building a computer for a friend and he wants to know if a 900mhz Thunderbird would hit 1ghz easily. Please tell me what I have to do, and what HSF would cool well for this? THanks!

It's definitely possible if the Tbird is not lucked, which I seriously dont have a clue about the current situation. If the multiplier is not lucked, you'll have to reach at least 112MHz front side bus to get to 1GHz, which I think is pretty hard for an Athlon Tbird.

No, I don't think it will hit 1 Gig that easily. I have the unlocked 800MHz core that only could do 950MHz.

Charles: I thought you have P3. P3-800 generally goes to 950. But Tbird is a different story.

TBirds seem to definitly be 'luck of the draw' - some claim the blue ones (Dresden fab'ed copper interconnect cores) overclock better <shrug> who knows for sure? I do know that I have a green core TBird 800 that does 900 easily, and will do 950 with extra voltage. 1G posts with lots of voltage (1.85) but won't load Windows. I have good, but not awesome cooling. Point is, don't count on more than 100MHz overclock ...

Would it be possible to "unlock" the multiplier? I've heard of people doing this with a graphite pen (pencil?) to a Duron. Anyone know anything about this?

Some of you made it sound like some T-Birds may not have locked multipliers. Is this true?!
