Will a 6600/6800 AGP do me good?

I've been out of the computer hardware things for a few years and don't know crap about the newer products made after '03 or so.

I have an xp2600, geforce fx5200 256mb agp, 768mb pc3200, asus nforce2 mobo, no pci-e slots.

I play NFS:MW at 640x480 everything turned down, that sucks. I hate it, but if I turn anything up (except the car detail, that's all the way up) the game will skip bad when getting into a heavy pursuit with lots of cops.

I just want to know if simply upgrading my video card will be enough for this game and games like this? How would a 6800 agp perform? Noticeably better? I like cheap, cuz right now I'm a little tight on money.

You would definately have a large increase in performance. A 6800 is much better then a FX5200.

from my experience in gaming from 5200 to 6600. You'll be VERY happy with the performance :thumsbup;

Thanks guys!

I was worried about needing to buy a new mobo/cpu/memory and all that to see a difference. I noticed my processor is still kind of expensive, is mine still considered okay?

I think I'll get the 6600 unless I see the 6800 for like, $5 more somewhere.

Any word on radeon alternatives in the same price range that do as well?

X800s are in the price range, I think, and they are roughly equivalent to the 6800s.

I don't know what price you can get your 6600 for but there is an AGP 7600GS that goes for around $130. Newer, better, comparable price.

No, not really. Its isn't ages old and Pentium 2 style slow, but is still outdated.

My friend recently upgraded from the 5200 to a 6600GT, and it was a huge speed difference. I used to own a 6600GT and got a really nice overclock out of it with a VF700-cu. The 6600GT and 6800 are pretty comprable. I found the one for my friend for $80 shipped on the FS/FT forum, so you might want to check those out. Here's one for $90 shipped right now.

I run a XP1700+ @ 2.0 ghz (200 x 10) and a plain 6800 (that I got for $69 AMIR @ CC this year) with all pipes fully unlocked for my MAME cabinet. I can play BF2 @ 1280 with Med settings easily.
