Will a 3rd GPU work when in a 2-way SLI system?

Howdy.

So, kinda a dumb question.

I'm running the good 'ol Asus P8 Z77-V Pro with a Core i5-3570k, with My Geforce 670 GTX cards in the 1st and 3rd PCI express 16x slots. I was curious to see if I tossed in my old ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 series PCI express card in the 3rd slot, if I could use it to run a separate monitor I don't game on. I tried leaving the 670s in both SLI and non-SLI mode, but can't seem to activate the third display through the ATI card.
My PSU should easily be able to handle a crappy old card. The "new" card shows up in the device manager, but I can't get it to turn on.
Am I simply asking too much of my PCI-Express bus? I didn't think I'd need it to run in full 16x mode, but I'm surprised it won't seem to do anything other than briefly flicker on then off when I'm turning off / on SLI.
Is it possible to run my 670s in SLI and have the ATI card power a third monitor? If so, what am I overlooking? (Imma rummage around in the UEFI next, I guess. The motherboard manual didn't tell me much.
I've not looked at this stuff in awhile, so I'm guessing slots one and two running at 8x use up all the available lanes, leaving the 3rd slot worthless.

Why not try to use the HD4000 graphics built in to your 3570K?
