Will a 300w PSU power this?

I was going to get a scan 2010 case, and it comes with three fans, a 300w psu, and an hd cooler.

My question is this - Will the 300w psu be able to power all this?

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
ABit KD7 (KT400)
1 stick 512Mb PC 2700
80Gb WD First Edition
16x Lg DVD-rom
40x12x40 Teac CD-RW
Radeon 9700 Pro
3 Case Fans, HD cooler, CPU Cooler

I am currently running this on a 250w PSU no problems;

Pentium 3 1ghz
Chaintech 6AJA4 (VIA 133a)
2x 256Mb SDRAM
80Gb WD First Edition
16x Lg DVD-rom
40x12x40 Teac CD-RW
Radeon 9700 Pro
2 Case Fans, CPU Cooler

The only change is the processor, motherboard, RAM, and fans

Thats a lot of stuff for a 300w power supply to handle. If its a decent Antec or Enermax power supply it may run okay but might want to think about upgrading power supplies to a 350w or 400w.

Will it be safe to use it for a while to see if it's stable or not - or is there a risk of component damage?

I wouldn't want to end up with a fried 9700pro, especially since it was the first to arrive in Malta (when my dad was on vacation to canada - i managed to persuade him to bring it with him, plus the hard-disk, and my brother told him to bring a toshiba satellite 1415)

Sh!t - i was looking in a hurry and noticed 300w

It is in fact a 350w Meridian (their support told me that) Here

Are those PSU's any good?

Comparision of your rig and mine;

Yours --- Mine
AMD 1700+ --- AMD 2600+
nforce 2 --- KT400
512mb pc 2100 --- 512mb pc2700
geforce 4 mx --- Radeon 9700
WD 20Gb 5400rpm + 6gb +4gb --- WD 80gb 7200rpm

I think your power usage and mine are very different. Thanks anyway

You can use this guide, and learn the basics of psus. Just add the things up, it's not that hard. You just have to be careful of the +12V rail.

Price - not sure yet if i'll get the abit nf7-s, but it is likely that ill be getting the kt400. Are there any reviews of kt400 vs nforce 2?

nd that psu looks like crap to me. get an antec, enermax, sparke or even a decen allied.

Again - price. I'm on a tight budget.

ummmm YEAH!!!! look on this website in the motherboard section and you will see that the nforce 2 kills the kt400 in stability and perfermance

i KNOW it is faster - what i don't know is by how much.

In my local store, the nf7-s is LM 25 more than the kd7(kt400), i.e. about $60

I just don't think it's worth the extra money.

Hell, even now, with a P3 1ghz, i can play unreal 2 at 1024x768 high settings, at about 25fps

I don't care if the nforce 2 scores 267fps, while the kt400 scores 260 in quake 3

you will care when the kt400 bugs out on you and the nforce2 doesnt. i *have* owned both. guess which one gave me and thousands of others problems? and why dont you just order online? you can get an $80 biostar nforce2 from newegg

I don't use the computer heavily - just that hour gaming daily. In Anand's review, only on ut2k3 was the nforce 2 5% superior - on other tasks they were about the same.

Oh - and regarding why don't i order online..........BECAUSE THE POSTAGE PRICE WILL BE DOUBLE ITEM PRICE

I live in Malta (an island just south of sicily), and postage is very high.

*not concerning computers begin*
My brother ordered a 299 english pound honey extractor, and the postage cost 90 english pounds. VAT cost another 70 english pounds.
*not concerning computers end*

Since malta is very small, there is only one computer store;

New Millenium

And it's prices are just the same as the store around the corner - not worth paying that 5 maltese liri for delivery

<another reason i'd rather be living in the US>

i have seen it written in block capitals all over the motherboard forum that nforce 2 = 'speed', and kt 400 = 'reliability'

It is normal for that occasional motherboard to bump out - and if that was your case, i certainly hope you fixed it/replaced it.

If that happens to me there is no pretty e-mails to Abit gently requesting for a replacement - i just threaten the shopkeeper. See?

The shopkeeper is a good friend of mine and is giving me a FOUR YEAR warranty on the parts (AMD 2600+, KT400, RAM, and Case with PSU + Fans)

I don't think i'll have any trouble if it goes bonkers in those four years.

Heck yes it will work as long as it's a true 300w p/s. Dell uses smaller power supplies on their computers.

No, it wasn't an april's fools.

Here; <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=29&threadid=1048076&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=">Nforce2 or KT400 for stability?

Heck, even YOU, Nick 1985, participated in it.

Next time stick your nose somewhere else
