Will a 2X/$X work in a 4X/8X AGP Slot?

A friend of mine gave me an old computer that im going to be using for playing old games and i am going to upgrade a couple things and am not sure how to check what type of video card to put in it i know its AGP but not sure if there is a difference between 2X/4X and 4X/8X so is there a difference between the two and if so can a 2/X/4X work in a 4/X8X and if not is there a way to check what it is the computer doesnt have a hdd so i cant boot into an OS and check

it will work. the agp will be set at eirthe 4x or 2x rate though. there will be a aslight performance decrease.

YES there is a difference... Older AGP Cards use a 3.3V connection I beleive, and the modern cards run at 1.5V. Obviously you could fry some silicon if you put the wrong peg in the wrong hole. Thankfully, most AGP slots have little plastic partitions that will not allow an incompatible card to fit in a slot that will fry it. Look for an AGP video card with 2 notches in the bottom where the connector is. This will ensure that is is compatible with both voltages, and will work in pretty much any 4X style AGP motherbaord.
