Will a 2002 A4 fall apart and cost a grip in maintainence?

I keep hearing bad things about Audi/VW's. Is it true?

I like this 18k mile, 2002 A4, used for $25k, but I'm not sure about their reliability.

How are they?

Fall apart? Probably not.

Cost a bunch in maintainence? Yes, if it breaks it will be big bucks. And given Audi's reliability record, it will break.

If well-maintained (just like any other make or model), they will last for a long time. The only problem with VW/Audi, BMW, Mercedes, ect. is that if you live in a small town and don't have a dealer close to you (mine is an hour away), you have to drive there to diagnose/fix the problem, or order the parts at a higher fee locally and do it yourself.

You're nickname just gave me a horrible mental image. You and Fleshlight need to get together.

Anyway, 25K does seem awefully high...but if it is at a dealer...I imagine you'll be able to talk them down from that figure.

It will be more costly to maintain...but it is one sweet looking ride (especially if it is a V6/manual/quattro...then it is not just good looking, it is pretty sweet performing as well).

San Diego. Not all of So cal says that. Only San Diego people.

Yah I'm from SD...and I love the Chargers.

BTW: How much does an oil change cost for a Audi?

$19.95

REALLY? I thought German cars costed like $100 for an oil change. Something like ECU updates etc.

I'd check and see if the coilpacks have been replaced. If they haven't, they most likely will have to be at some point. Is this a 1.8t or the 3.0L V6?

Well, I guess any car will cost $20 - $30 at a Penzoil station or similar. They all have a friggin drain plug and a filter.
Why would an oil change require an ECU update?

Umm...the costs depends on the engine. The 3.0 V6 takes about 6 quarts of oil. The 1.8T take about 4.2 quarts. So thats $3.99 (when its on sale, $4.99 otherwise) times whatever quarts for synthetic Mobil 1 0w40, plus anywhere from $9 to $15 for an OEM Mann filter from the dealer, and a quater or so for the new cruch washer. This is all assuming you do your own oil changes.

Some Audi service stations still use bulk synthetic-blend oil that is not even designed for the 10k miles interval, let alone the abuses of a turbo, if you are to bring it in for the free scheduled maintenence.

my 2000 audi a4 is still holding together...
😛

but yes $$$$ to fix if something goes wrong... which hasnt happen yet *knock on wood*

WORD

tea bag.. fleshlight.. man, these forums have gotten 'colorful' recently.

i have a 2002 a4 1.8t. there's been a few little things that have gone wrong, all covered under warranty. still runs great. only about 30k miles on it though. trying to get the full 4 year warranty out of it. I think *most* of audi's reliability issues are in the past...though yes, coilpacks were a problem.

The price seems high but I'd say go for it. My dad has a 1999 A6 and it hasn't had any major problems. It's had a few electrical problems, the Instrument panel display broke but that was fixed under the warranty. Since the car is a 2002 model you get a 4 year warranty which also covers maintenance so you'll through 2006 with no worries. Also, I'm not sure if you can still do this buy you can buy the audi assured warranty once the 4 year warranty runs out. They let my dad do that with his audi, so for 800 bucks he bought a extra 2 year warranty( doesn't include maintenance). So if you buy this car and go back for the extra warranty you'll get 4 years warranty and have no worries about the car. The extended audi assured warranty is 2 year/100,000 mile warranty with a 50 dollar deductible. In my dads case his instrument panel display broke and the only way to fix it was the replace the whole damn thing which cost 1700 bucks, since he was covered in the assured warranty it only cost 50 bucks.

And for the oil change issue, I know the audi deal my dad goes to charges 65 bucks for synthetic oil on a 2.8 V6.

And finally next year there will be slight redesign of the A4, it's getting a new front end bumper with a big grill and I think the brake lights are getting a change too.
