Will a 1x/2x/4x card work in a 4x/8x slot?

Hallo,

Well, I replaced a motherboard for my dad, but I didn't realize the new board(Shuttle AN35N Ultra) has a 4x/8x agp slot. So the 3 older agp cards that I could have used are all useless(just don't fit into the slot), and I'm looking for a cheap replacement. Basically, the machine is used for word processing, minor gaming(never cutting edge new games), and watching DVD's.

Someone mentioned a cheap Gigabyte ATI Radeon 7000 in another thread. The price on this is acceptable, but can someone confirm if it will work with a Shuttle AN35N Ultra? The card looks like it will fit into any AGP slot, but does necessarily that mean it will work with the board? It would make sense if the board were backwards compatible, but now I'm all paranoid, so I can't say for sure.

Also, if you can think of a better video card for the same price or less, please let me know. Thanks for any advice.

It will work in the slot. What games will you be playing? The card will be somewhat crippled by th 64 bit bus, but will probably be ok for most older games.

Thanks for the response.

He plays some older games like FF8 sometimes, PC version. Some import games, but they aren't 3D intensive. I think even low end cards should be okay running stuff like that. Plus he games like once a month, so it's not really worth it.

Yes, the 7000 series are "Universal AGP", fitting boards old and new.

You should give your dad at least a 9200SE card - these are just about $10 more than the 7000, but are DirectX 8 hardware and lots faster than 7000 anyway.

E.g. this here.
