will a 133 MHz CPU run in a 100 MHz board ?

possibly stupid question ... I have an IBM slot 1 machine (100FSB) that came with a 450 MHz PIII, and tech support says the board can use up to 700 MHz chip. If I was to plug in a 1GHZ PIII (133MHZ) into this board, will it work at 750 MHz ?? or will it not work at all ??

Yep, if your mobo is capable of providing exactly the voltage it needs, it should run at 750..

Yah probably, but you would effectively be under-clocking it b/c of the locked multiliers on P3's. Don't listen to tech support, they are stupid. If you are going to buy a P3 slot 1, buy the highest rated P3-E (100mhz) FSB you are willing to pay for. The last BIOS update for the 440BX chipset opened all the multipliers up to like 1.1 or 1.2 gigs. You can either get the slot 1's, which tend to be more scarce and cost more, or you can get a FCPGA P3 (make sure you get the 100mhz FSB version though) and a slocket adapter.

I think it depends on the board. I believe you would have the best chance if you use a FCPGA with a slocket, and set the FSB on the slocket to 100MHz. That way to the mobo, it appears as a 100MHz chip, whereas some boards might be "confused" by a 133MHz chip. I had a spare 1GHz chip and tried this on an older MSI BX board and it runs fine at 750 even though the bios identifies it a Pentium 133.
